This post has been a long time coming, so when Keri approached me, asking if I was willing to contribute an article to share my Reiki story, I could not refuse. Reiki has and continues to be a pivotal part of my personal growth, and life as a whole. It is something I wish for everyone to experience, and I hope that sharing my story may inspire others.

I remember my very first experience as if it were yesterday. It happened seven years ago when my friend kindly offered to give me a Reiki healing treatment. I had no idea what it was. All she told me was that I would feel deeply relaxed. That was all I needed to hear to agree to it.

She had me lay down on a yoga mat, with a pillow under my head, and asked me to close my eyes and relax. What was really interesting was, despite her hands not physically touching me (she hovered them an inch above) throughout the one hour treatment, I felt sensations around the crown of my head, which felt like a mix of tingling and buzzing. There was also a pulsating warmth unlike anything I had felt before – not quite the same as what I know to be regular body heat. This was different. It felt like a radiating heat pack. I was intrigued to say the least. What was this, I wondered?

I must have drifted off to sleep because the next thing I knew, she was gently nudging me awake. I felt incredibly calm and relaxed – a lightness in my being unlike anything I had experienced before. I did not quite understand it, but I knew I wanted more. Five years later, I decided to learn Reiki for myself, which remains one of my best decisions.

So, what exactly is Reiki? It is an energy therapy, which works with the body’s own remarkable healing capabilities, helping to encourage and accelerate its natural healing process, and restore overall balance to the body’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Reiki originated in Japan and was founded by Mikao Usui. The word ‘Rei’ may be referred to as divine, spiritual, pure or source, and ‘Ki’ refers to energy – similar to ‘Chi’ in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and ‘Prana’ in Indian Ayurvedic philosophy. Reiki today is commonly known as Universal Energy, and to me, is energy at its purest.

A Reiki treatment is done through the hands, simply by having the practitioner place or hover their hands on, or above the body (fully clothed), which activates the energy to flow into the body. No special movement, posture or action is required. The Reiki energy will be used by the body to help heal, rejuvenate and reinvigorate. Whatever health or wellness issue the person suffers from, including physical ailments, disease, stress or anxiety, and any emotional or trauma based issues, can often be helped with Reiki in a very gentle and releasing way. Another wonderful trait of Reiki is there are no known contraindications. This means that Reiki is complementary to other forms of healing, be it conventional medicine or other holistic therapies.

When I signed up to learn Reiki, I went in with my sights on level two – at this level, we learn advanced tools like how to send Reiki over distance, and often seems to be what gets most people excited. This was appealing to me because I wanted to be able to offer healing to my loved ones – who live overseas – in times of need. I saw it as my way of offering them love across the miles, in a tangible manner. However, in order to do that, I had to go through level one first – getting Reiki activated in my hands, and learning how to use it.

I expected to stop at level two, but life had other plans for me. Level two progressed to level three, and before I could fully make sense of what was happening, I found myself signing up for the Reiki Master Training (RMT). I remember having many doubts, the main one being my fear of public speaking. How could I possibly teach a class?! It was never my plan to go on this journey with the intention to teach Reiki. My focus was always on personal growth, and to offer healing to my loved ones. However, it grew into something much bigger than myself. I felt a pull to go further. So I asked for a sign. Early one morning, two weeks before the start of the RMT course, I looked out the window. As I was gazing at the trees, I was surprised to see four white butterflies fluttering above the canopy. I live on the seventh story, and had never seen any butterflies from that height, let alone four of them together. I took that as my sign. I cannot explain how I knew, I just did – one butterfly to represent each of the three levels I had completed, and the fourth, to represent my future Reiki Master certification. I will always remember that magical morning, and since then, life has repeatedly given me moments of wild synchronicity to affirm me that I am on the right path. I completed my Reiki Master Training in September 2016, and in addition to hosting upcoming healing groups for beginners, I also have plans to conduct my first level one workshop later this year.

Although my desire to learn to Reiki was intended around offering healing to others, I soon learned that at its very core, Reiki is fundamentally a way to self-healing. Two years on, I can tell you that Reiki has helped me far beyond my physiological ailments. What I feel I have gained the most is deeper awareness, profound clarity and insight into issues that I previously didn’t have, being mindfully present, and having greater peace from being able to accept circumstances as they are, as opposed to resisting them when the outcomes were – in my limited belief – not ideal. Having a full time corporate job also means that Reiki helps to balance and ground me from the daily stresses that it brings.

There are many various forms of holistic healing therapies, but the wonderful aspect which Reiki offers that I find lacking in others, is the element of self-empowerment. My role as a practitioner and teacher allows me to shine light where needed, so that my clients and students can realize how to heal themselves, through greater clarity and their own Reiki practice. In my experience, the body has proven to be highly intelligent and remarkable, capable of profound healing.

Reiki has shown me that true peace and happiness comes from within. My purpose as a Reiki practitioner and teacher, is to inspire others to uncover this potential within themselves, and to be a guiding light for them on their own journey of self-healing, towards a more holistic and fulfilled life.

Guest Post by Amanda Saurin of A.S Apothecary for The Greenly Guide

Last week I walked through our land and examined our Roses – there are around 200 of them, their leaves were glossy and buds were forming on strong prickly stems, I’m hopeful to see flowers in the next couple of weeks. I moved on to the rows of Lavender and Clary Sage then paused to admire the Immortelle before looking at the hundreds of seedlings popping up in the polytunnel soon to be planted out. Trays of Calendula, Chamomile and Achillea to name but a few.

Our work as makers is unique in this fickle world of beauty where people are persuaded to strive for the latest ‘must have’, where the relationship between whole plant and product stretches ever further apart. Even within the world of green beauty the words ‘derived from…insert plant name…’ seem to be dominating development. That there is a tenuous relationship to a plant now seems adequate to trumpet naturalness. But actually it’s disingenuous to claim naturalness and green credentials where a plant has gone through so many processes of industrial extraction to become an ingredient.

Equally adding an ingredient on the basis that we produce it in our own bodies, such as hyaluronic acid, does not shout natural if the production uses the combs of dead cockerels or genetically engineered micro-organisms.

What we do, in contrast, is labour intensive and very time consuming drawing on my life’s work as a Plantswoman, Homeopath and Herbalist. We use the whole plant and our methods of extracting the therapeutics are as old as they are effective. We distil in a big copper Alembic slowly and gently making separate distillations for our Aromatic Waters and Essential Oils because each demands a different type of distillation. We macerate our plants by chopping them up and adding them to oils to draw out their goodness over the course of a lunar month. We do the same with alcohol to produce medicinal tinctures. We enfleurage by resting the flowers on a bed of Shea butter to slowly absorb their wonderful perfume, changing them up to a dozen times.

All our processes are simple because that is all that is needed to make a product that strengthens, heals and nourishes the skin. It is not about multiple processes but rather about a few, done very well, on plants grown organically or foraged by us and picked at the perfect moment.

It’s also about making by hand. As everything is made with our hands it means that the only ingredients that go into our products are the ones that benefit humans. Where products are made in factories by machines, ingredients must be added to control viscosity and texture, they must be homogenous and without seasonal variation. There is also something about intention – where making is on a human scale, every stir of a spoon, picking of a plant or filling of a Still is imbued with positive intention, the little pot carries within it something more than the sum of its ingredients.

We also believe in going to the plants. We know that Geraniums and Pink Pepper, Orange Blossom and Thyme grow best in a dry, hot climate. In the UK we definitely don’t have that so each April we travel to Cyprus where we keep a big Still and we pick and distil there. The plants are fresh, they are in perfect condition and they have grown in a landscape that suits their needs.

We also travel to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland to a little island in the Atlantic Ocean where the very best Heather, Meadowsweet and Honeysuckle grow. We pick and dry the plants before bringing them home to macerate and tincture them.

Our work is not driven by profit, it is driven by a desire to help people have the very best skin they can and our products deliver, perhaps not overnight but with regular use. Healthy, beautiful skin takes time to recover from the ravages of mass produced, industrial skincare but it’s so worth the wait.

A customized skin ritual

In terms of products, we like to encourage slow ritual. As a population we are stressed, overworked and juggling increasingly busy lives so we love the idea of taking 15 minutes to reconnect and relax and the essential oil combinations we use and textures we create offer a salve for the spirit as well as the skin.

We start with Cleansing oil 5, just 3 or 4 drops is sufficient. Drop it onto the fingertips and then massage into the face slowly and gently, leave for a minute and then rinse off with our crocheted Cleansing Cloth.

Follow this with one of our Aromatic Waters, Rose for dry, sensitive or mature skin, Lavender for inflamed, irritated skin, Orange Blossom for a mild astringent or Geranium where hormones play a part in breakouts.

Then we suggest a Face Cream – our creams are rich in antioxidants and fabulously creamy without being greasy at all, no3 for mature skin, no5 for balanced skin or no6 for skin tending towards oily.

Once a week we suggest an exfoliation with Mineral Powder – it contains all our best flowers, Seaweed which we have dived for us in Harris, Clay from Argyll and medicinal grade Sandalwood. Make it into a loose paste using Cleansing oil and gently massage it into the face and backs of hands, then rinse it off with warm water. Don’t scrub, it doesn’t need that, just be gentle. Exfoliating with this powder very gently removes dry skin cells and allows the other products to penetrate the skin better leaving it glowing and healthy.

It’s our hope that we can encourage people to feel good about their skin and make the change to an effective skincare regime that enhances the skin, protects the planet, isn’t subject to fashion and is made with love…

Scents are very powerful. They can evoke powerful memories and bring us back to a very specific moment in our lives. As a young girl, I can remember the smell of my mother and grandmother’s perfume and waiting for the day when I could choose my very own fragrances to wear. Sadly though, many of the conventional perfumes that you find in department stores and beauty stores are filled with potentially harmful chemicals. We are thrilled today to have blogger, Trish, of Scent Hive guest posting for us on her experiences with natural perfumes, why they are better for your health and which brands she loves. Please read on below for Trish’s full post.

Trish started to blog about natural perfumes and green beauty in 2009 as she began her transition to green products in her home. Scent Hive was born out of her desire to share her discoveries, and as a place to wax poetic about her love of natural fragrances. She has since branched out and started a YouTube channel that focuses on green beauty, but perfume will always remain her first true passion.

Trish lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two boys. She is also a nurse midwife and an avid tennis player.

Like many people who are drawn to perfume, my first experiences with fragrance began when I was young. My mom wore amazing scents like Chanel No 19, Diorissimo, and Rive Gauche, and I would help my dad perfume shop for her at Christmas. We would go to the department store together and test perfumes, trying to decide on the perfect one to place under the tree. I of course had to have perfumes of my own, and since I was a child of the 80’s I’ve worn some pretty big ones like Lauren, Coco and even Giorgio for a spell. But it wasn’t until the early 2000’s when I went on a trip to Hawaii that I truly fell down the rabbit hole of perfume obsession. Upon returning home, I desperately wanted to find the perfect plumeria perfume and began frequenting perfume blogs, forums, and Makeupalley to aid in my quest. Once I was introduced to that world, I became intrigued with all kinds of essences and had to smell them in whatever perfume captured my attention.

Around that same time I was “greening up” my skincare and household products, and started to delve into the natural perfume world as well. As the realm of eco perfume opened up in my life, I became very passionate about it and wanted share my discoveries and started my blog Scent Hive in 2009.

Everyone’s journey regarding their “shade of green” is so personal, but for me I have come to prefer natural perfumes for two reasons, the beauty they offer and the risks they don’t. Perfumes made from botanical essences (flowers, leaves, barks, rinds, and roots) feel nuanced, sensual and alive on my skin. The radiance of natural perfumes meld into my skin and integrate with my body chemistry but in an intimate way, as the fragrances typically stay close and only those very near me can sense their presence. In Essence and Alchemy, Mandy Aftel puts it beautifully when she writes,

Natural essences are the atoms of perfumery, the building blocks with which complex and evocative scents are created. They are, in a sense, substances in their most concentrated but least material form, containing the whole nature and perfection of the substances themselves. They possess a compressed vitality, a bioactive power that cannot be measured by chemical analysis but which manifests itself in their potent effect on our emotions and states of consciousness.

Mandy’s words eloquently express why natural essences are so very powerful and potent and why I continue to have my ongoing love affair with natural perfumes.

It also bears mentioning that natural perfumes don’t contain endocrine disrupting chemicals like phthalates or synthetic aromachemicals that come from petroleum, ingredients I choose to avoid. Unfortunately, both phthalates and aromachemicals are common in conventional perfumes (phthalates are what make them last for so long) and what is even more confusing, is there are many perfume and body care companies who claim to be natural but sadly use synthetic fragrance. So be sure to read ingredient labels carefully. If you see the word “fragrance” in the ingredient list with no clear explanation of its origin, then be skeptical. Sometimes you have to read between the lines and if the language is not straightforward, or the perfume is really inexpensive, it’s probably not 100% natural.

Which leads me to my favorite perfume brands, and the fact that they are not cheap! But truly natural fragrances that are made with high quality, organic or wildcrafted botanical ingredients are costly so the following perfumers’ creations do come with at a high price tag, but in my opinion, they merit the cost. I mentioned the author Mandy Aftel, and she also makes some of the most stunning and interesting perfumes you will come across. I have reviewed many of her perfumes over the years, but Vanilla Smoke and Amber Tapestry are two of her perfumes that would resonate with a lot of perfume lovers. She also makes luxurious facial elixirs (the Organic Jasmine Face Elixir is divine) as well as body oils and chef’s essences.

Another perfumer whose work I have been following for many years is Ayala Moriel of Ayala Moriel Parfums. She has so many perfumes to choose from that it can feel a little overwhelming, but her website is easy to explore so give yourself some time to peruse it and see if anything strikes your fancy. If I had to pick a few, Hanami, White Potion, and Fête d’Hiver are among my top choices from Ayala’s line.

Another perfumer that has impeccably high standards and offers gorgeous botanical perfumes is Roxana Villa of Illuminated Perfume. She creates liquid and solid perfumes and even keeps her own bees. She has recently created the most incredible Jasmine Sambac Hydrosol that has the potent effect on my emotions and state of consciousness that I referenced above from Essence and Alchemy. My favorites from Roxana include Mellifera, Chaparral, and Lyra. (If you are curious about any of the perfumes that I have mentioned, they have all been reviewed on my blog).

In closing I would like to say that these are only three natural perfumers that I have chosen to highlight, but there are so many out there doing great work. Providence Perfume Co, Hiram Green, Strange Invisible Perfumes, and Los Feliz Botanicals are some other perfume brands that make exceptionally beautiful all natural perfumes. There are so many to explore, and yes, my blog is a good place to start, but consider your journey more than doing research on the computer. Order samples, smell raw materials and swap perfumes with friends. Dive into this world and it will repay you in luxurious multitudes as “perfumistas” are known to be generous and overly exuberant about their olfactory hobby.

I hope this leads you to find some new favorite natural perfumes. I still have not found that elusive “perfect plumeria” perfume but I have found other fragrances that provide me moments of bliss. As Mandy Aftels says, “(Scent) allows us to experience life afresh, sets the imagination flowing. But as with any art, we must seek it out and welcome the transformation it allows.”

Sometimes when negative events happens in our lives, it is easy to sit back and feel sorry for ourselves. This was not the case for Lydia. When she lost her job, she saw it as an opportunity to fulfill her dream of becoming a business owner, and through her passion, WEBA Naturals was born.

After trying many conventional products to soothe and heal her dry, sensitive skin, and finding that nothing worked, she discovered the reason for this was that she had developed an extreme chemical sensitivity. All of the ingredients used in mainstream personal care products were making her feel miserable and causing her watery eyes and headaches. Upon making the switch to all natural products, these symptoms disappeared.

After this discovery, she began her journey into the world of herbal remedies, plant-based treatments and ancient practices. Formulating products in her kitchen and sharing them with family and friends led to the business she has created today. Lydia not only focuses on sourcing wonderful ingredients, she is also passionate about giving back to her community and is striving for a zero-waste manufacturing process.

Lydia is so kindly sharing her story on The Greenly Guide today. In addition to sharing more about herself and her brand, she has also very generously provided a discount code that can be used on their website! Now through April 5, 2017, enter the code ‘thegreenlyguide15‘ to receive 15% off your order! Please read on below for the full interview with Lydia, founder of WEBA Naturals.

The Greenly Guide: After experiencing chemical sensitivities to the products you were using, you eventually turned to creating your own products. As a therapist by training, coming from a very different profession, can you share a little about your background with natural products, how you began formulating and any training you have?

Lydia: After realizing that I could no longer use certain products, I began researching this phenomenon. I learned that I was not alone. I found terms like “Extreme chemical sensitivity” and “Toxicant-induced loss of tolerance (TILT), which has been misunderstood among many professionals. I also realized that I did not experience the same reactions to naturally-produced, plant-based ingredients. I began spending years researching formularies, consulting with cosmetic chemists, attending webinars, and reading anything that I could get my hands on. Everything from aromatherapy and herbal medicine to ayurveda and wild edibles were fair game. I am always learning, and continue to do so to this day. The rest is history.

The Greenly Guide: WEBA stands for ‘whole earth body actives’ which you have stated guides your decision to provide the highest quality ingredients that are good for us and our planet. Can you talk a little about your ingredients and how you source them?

Lydia: The first rule of thumb is to make certain that wild-harvested essential oils are not endangered or “rare.” I try to ask the right questions when expanding our supply chain so that I can feel good about adding that ingredient to our products. I try hard to source products that are made locally or in the U.S.A., but it isn’t always possible. Most of the oils and butters that we use are sourced in Europe, Africa, and Asia, for example. These products provide real wages to many poor communities in these countries and are a major source of income. Many of our botanicals, however, are grown in the U.S. organically and sustainably, so we buy from them.

The Greenly Guide: On the topic of ingredients, do you have a favorite ingredient that you work with and include in your products? What about any difficult to work with ingredients you have used?

Lydia: It can be difficult to choose one favorite; I have so many. My favorite essential oil is lavender for its healing properties and its relaxing scent. A favorite emollient is shea butter. The only ingredients that I find challenging is the sodium hydroxide that I use to create the bar soaps. Care must be taken with it, as it is a very strong base.

Organic French Lavender Sachet

The Greenly Guide: You have mentioned the importance of simplicity and minimalism within your line, and using multi-purpose products to reduce the number of items a person needs in their collection. Can you share some of the different ways your products can be utilized?

Lydia: All of the bar soaps are “3-in-1” soaps – that is, they are suitable for cleansing, shaving, and shampooing. The secret is in the rich, creamy lather they produce. In fact, ounce for ounce, bar soaps cost less than shower gels. My husband, Marvin, uses nothing else. We like to use the tea tree/oatmeal soap on our dog, Millie. Our balms have as many as ten uses –beard balm, cuticle oil, lip balm, anti-itch salve and everything in between. The lavender balm is also effective against mosquitoes. The Dry Oil is not only effective against frizzy hair and flyaways, but it’s a great massage oil and after-shower oil.

The Greenly Guide: I loved reading about your avoidance of the controversial ingredient palm oil. For those who may not be aware, can you briefly explain why you omit this ingredient and why that was important to you?

Lydia: I first read about the problems with palm oil on the Rainforest Action Network website. “Conflict” palm oil is grown primarily in Indonesia and Malasia, where rainforests are being clear-cut to accommodate this product. It is found in everything from food to feed to cosmetics and skincare. As a result, many native species like the Orangutan, which is now near extinction, are displaced. This is also responsible for many human rights abuses, including child labor practices. I decided early on that my business would not be a contributor to this problem. The butters that I use to substitute it are more expensive, but I feel that it is worth it. While many big players in the palm oil industry have committed to buying certified sustainable palm oil, we have a long way to go before a total commitment to rainforest-free palm oil can be achieved. I hope that it happens.

“Relax” Botanical Handmade Bar Soap

The Greenly Guide: For someone who may be viewing your brand for the first time, what are your more popular items that you would suggest someone try to get a taste of what WEBA Naturals has to offer?

Lydia: The first bar soap that I made – “Relax” – is still my most popular item. If you pair that with the Lavender/Tea Tree Body Balm, you have a complete skincare system. Pairing the sugar scrub with the dry oil is also a good combination for normal to dry skin.

The Greenly Guide: In your manufacturing, you strive for a zero-waste process to reduce your impact on the environment. Can you explain a little about the practices you use to achieve this in your production?

Lydia: “Zero-waste” embodies two principles; using what you have and using less than you need to. I engage in both. For example, instead of buying packaging for my shipments I utilize re-used and recycled cardboard boxes and used/recycled paper. I never use bubble wrap or peanuts that don’t degrade. I re-batch our soap ends and mold them into bars that we donate to a local food bank. I re-use and recycle all glass and plastic bottles. My paper towels are recycled unbleached paper or I use cotton towels. Every ingredient is biodegradable. As a result, there is very little that ends up in the trash. While I can’t always control what suppliers send me, I can certainly control what goes out.

Awaken Body Smoother

The Greenly Guide: In addition to your efforts to reduce your footprint on our planet, you are also passionate about giving back. Can you talk about how you are using WEBA Naturals to support your community?

Lydia: Since I began the business 3 years ago, I’ve given back by donating soap to a local food pantry. I also donate 3-4 gift baskets/year to local charities for their fundraisers. I try to stick to local small businesses when I need professional business services like graphic design and photography. I hire local crafters to make our accessories (sachets and washcloths). I also buy from local businesses. I feel that it’s important for small businesses to support each other given the current retail climate.

The Greenly Guide: What are your goals for WEBA Naturals in 2017, and what new things can we expect from you in the future?

Lydia: I’m always looking for opportunities to partner with businesses that are doing good. I’m hoping to collaborate with a local animal shelter to create a balm that can be used to soothe paw and skin problems. I’m hoping to roll out an ayurvedic deodorant, an oil cleanser, and a few serums. It’s an ambitious undertaking, but I like to aim high. I will also be doing tabling events later this year, including one at a NYC college for Earth Day. I’d also like to hold a few workshops. I’m excited to see what the future brings for WEBA in 2017 and beyond.

I think it’s safe to say that parents want what is best for their children. We want to protect them and provide them with love so they can grow and thrive. With this need to keep our kids safe and provide them with products that will not harm them, it makes sense that many women’s paths to finding natural products begin when they become pregnant for the first time. During these nine months, many of us feel an instinctual pull to research more and to find out if something will be the absolute safest for our new bundle.

As a mother myself, this is where my journey began. I became concerned with every single thing I put into my body and onto it as well, knowing that for the first time, my actions were impacting a life other than my own. My concern for product and ingredient safety became a part of my lifestyle, and it has led me to find incredible brands with these same motivations and goals in mind.

The Greenly Guide: Can you talk a little about how you first become interested in natural and non-toxic products and how this lead to the start of Pleni Naturals?

Allyson: Like a lot of women, my journey into the natural and nontoxic world began while I was pregnant with my first child in 2009. It was a journey for me; I didn’t completely go “nontoxic” while pregnant because I was still somewhat unaware of toxic chemicals in the home, but my first detox was definitely my skincare routine! It was also important to me that my babies used safe, nontoxic skincare as well. Before I started Pleni Naturals I was an aesthetician and then I became a consultant and helped skin care brands develop their skin care products. I knew that eventually I would create my own skin care line and I wanted to do something different than what was currently being offered in the natural baby category. Don’t get me wrong; I love flowers but every baby skin care product at the time had flowers in it! I chose to focus on fruit and vegetable ingredients because they are wholesome, just like our babies. Plus, fruit and vegetable oils offer amazing nutritional benefits for the skin. For example; red raspberry seed oil and cranberry seed oil contain omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids, which our bodies don’t produce and it is necessary to obtain through diet or topically on the skin. These two ingredients help to keep sensitive skin happy and is great for babies and kids suffering from eczema. You can find these two ingredients in our Cucumber + Grape Baby Oil and Berry + Olive Baby Balm. Two other stand out ingredients from the Pleni Naturals skincare line are broccoli seed oil and cucumber seed oil. Broccoli seed oil has a silky finish and works like a natural silicone alternative that leaves the skin smooth and the hair soft and shiny and cucumber seed oil is fantastic for soothing and replenishing the skin’s moisture balance. Both broccoli seed oil and cucumber seed oil can be found in our Apple + Broccoli Hair and Body Wash and the cucumber seed oil can be found in our Cucumber + Grape Baby Oil.

The Greenly Guide: You mention that you created your line of wholesome and organic skincare products for babies and kids to help them develop a lifelong love for veggies, and you also partner with the organization, Life Lab, to help change the way kids think about fruits and veggies. Can you share a little about your partnership and why it is important to your company’s mission?

Allyson: In addition to the answer in question #1 the idea for Pleni Naturals to focus on fruits and veggies was because of my own struggles as a parent inspiring my own kids to love their fruits and veggies! It can be a lot of work! I know other parents struggle with this as well. The fruit and veggie characters on the packaging are fun and silly and it is our mission to deepen that connection with kids and the healthy foods they eat. Plus, the skin is our largest organ and at Pleni Naturals, it makes sense to us to “feed” the skin with the same nutritious fruits and vegetables we put in our bodies. We decided to partner with Life Lab because their values are in alignment with ours — to deepen the connection with kids and the healthy foods they eat. Life Lab is a nonprofit that provides garden education curriculum for schools and I 100% believe that every school should have access to a school garden so they can experience an “edible education”.

The Greenly Guide: How do you keep your own children interested in healthy foods?

Allyson: In many ways! By being an example and making healthy foods choices every day for myself; always stocking plenty of fruits and veggies they have easy access to as a snack; I juice with my son and make smoothies for my daughter regularly (which is how they prefer to get those extra nutrients in, respectively); we go to farmer’s markets; we visit Life Lab on the weekends and enjoy running around the farm (it’s in Santa Cruz, CA which is fairly close to us); we provide a lot of color on the plate especially at dinner time so the food is visually appealing; I tell the kids why the healthy foods they are eating are good for them (i.e. good for your eyesight, makes your bones strong). I also get a lot of healthy recipe inspiration from food bloggers.

The Greenly Guide: As a mother and business owner, how do you find balance between your work and home life?

Allyson: It’s a juggle! But I am so grateful I am able to do this kind of work. I work very efficiently between school drop-off and pickup and I don’t look at my computer again until after the kids are in bed (unless it’s urgent–sometimes things come up!). I often stay up late to get any unfinished work completed and I’m a little more tired than I like, but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing about my current work/home life situation. I love it!

The Greenly Guide: Pleni Naturals has been certified as a brand with MADE SAFE – can you share why it was important to you to pursue this certification and what it means for your brand?

Allyson: I knew while developing the Pleni Naturals line I wanted it to be nontoxic and I spent a lot of time in R&D making sure every product was clean. People may not realize how much work this is; especially when your ingredient “NO” list is as long as ours! Plus, there is a lot of greenwashing in the skincare industry and no regulatory body that prevents companies from calling their products “nontoxic”. How is the consumer supposed to trust skincare brands with all of this greenwashing going on? What products are truly safe to purchase/use? I like MADE SAFE because they screen products for us – the consumer – and only certify products that do not contain harmful toxins that affect our bodies and our environment. And when I learned about MADE SAFE and their mission to eliminate toxins from all products we use in our home, I knew this was the certification I had to have for our brand. Currently, all three Pleni Naturals products are MADE SAFE certified and I plan on all future products we develop to be MADE SAFE certified as well.

The Greenly Guide: What has been your greatest challenge in developing your line of products?

Allyson: By far, the biggest challenge in developing the Pleni Naturals products is preservation! If a product has water in it, it needs to be preserved. Period. The challenge is that it is truly difficult to find preservatives that work and are also natural. There needs to be more options in this area and I am sure every single green skin care company feels the same way! We were lucky to find a 100% natural lactobacillus preservative that works great for our Apple + Broccoli Hair and Body Wash but it doesn’t work for our yet to be released lotion, which we won’t launch until we find a safe preservative blend that works and is in alignment with our values. Also, the problem with the few natural preservatives that are available is that some contain salicylates (think salicylic acid) and these are not appropriate for babies and kids or pregnant women, who also use our products.

We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Kristi, and are so excited to share with you her incredible knowledge and a glimpse of what goes into developing her unique and modern herbal infusions. Please read on for our complete interview as well as an exclusive reader discount code below.

The Greenly Guide: For our readers who are perhaps new to organic skincare and holistic health, can you begin by briefly explaining your background in Ayurvedic medicine, what exactly that means and how you apply those practices in your skincare?

Kristi: I have certifications in Ayurvedic Medicine and Ayurvedic Health and Education from the California College of Ayurveda, with intensives in Ayurvedic Herbal preparation, as well as Aromatherapy and Western Herbalism. What this means as it pertains to formula design is that I have extensive training (1800+ hours) in classical formula design for healing and creating balance in the body. When I formulate a product, I’m looking for various botanical constituents to assist the body and mind in creating energetic healing, working through internal and external healing components. It’s a multi-faceted design because as an Ayurvedic practitioner, I look at skin health as a physical manifestation – a reflection of what is happening internally as well as the state of the mind. All of our body and face treatments are designed to calm the nervous system as well as promote skin health through the bloodstream via the olfactory system.

Essential oils, or pharmaceutical grade plant medicine, have an energetic component that is intrinsically understood not only by formula and product developers, but also through consistent use. It can’t be denied that these essential oils are incredibly helpful in assisting us in the development of true health and vitality. Of course, there are also lifestyle choices that have to be cultivated that certainly contribute to the state of our health. Plants open us to a new way of living that is supportive of this process. They work in ways that we may not necessarily understand right away, but in time through use, the information is mentally digested and is developed through our consciousness.

The Greenly Guide: I always think it is interesting to hear the story behind the name of a brand – can you share the meaning and any significance behind the name KHUS+KHUS and how you settled on this for your brand?

Kristi: It’s a play on the vetiver plant also known by its Indian name ruh khus or khus oil. Known as the Oil of Tranquility, the chemical composition is very complex. It’s described by well-known herbalists as connecting earth’s energies – offering a source of vital energy and regeneration, supporting those who have lost touch with the earth and their roots. The name came to me in meditation; in my perspective, all real truth comes through meditation and when that happens, it’s best just to roll with it. The word “modern” is a reflection of myself; I’m not your typical woodsy herbalist. I was born in Miami, and I’ve been into modern design and aesthetic most of my adult life. I do live in the mountains of Colorado now, but I still have an edge and like my urban flair. I think the products represent my style, and people who know me personally can attest to this. The addition of “herbal fusion” is thanks to my training. I bring to the line a combination of what I’ve learned about plants through various teachers and various trainings in Ayurvedic herbalism, Western Herbalism, Vedic Science and Aromatherapy.

The Greenly Guide: As a formulator, what does the process look like for you when you are developing a product? From the beginning stages where it is just an idea to the very end, what goes on behind the scenes of your creations?

Kristi: In the beginning, when I first came up with the concept to do the line, I spent two years researching. I’m a perfectionist by nature (and by astrological sign as well (Virgo)), so there’s always a lot of research that goes into anything I do. I generally start with a concept for a product; for example, with our new body serum WORSHIP, I wanted to move into more exotic aromas, and I wanted to educate consumers about the use of aromas throughout history – aromas that humanity has used for enhancement of consciousness, meditation, energy clearing and prayer. After this extensive research, I will then choose a chief botanical. From here, I will research potential supporting plants; these will have constituents that enhance the action on the body and mind by increasing the desired components of the chief botanical. I will source the best oils I can get my hands on.

I have several requirements before I purchase, the most important being cultivation practices; I only deal with reputable distillers. If possible, I like to get Eco-certified ingredients. Then of course, there’s the aroma; I think people will begin to recognize the brand for the very distinct and complex aromas we offer. I like to think I have a very pronounced sense of smell, and I very much enjoy a pleasant aroma, although when dealing with botanicals sometimes an aroma may be more medicinal in nature. It may take time to get adjusted to a particular aroma, but the medicinal benefits are certainly worth it. It is a craft so the creation process is ongoing and it is only through the experience of working with the ingredients that you get the formula just right. Aroma plays a large role in this, as well as following proper protocols for the use of essential oils, especially when they are applied to the skin. There is a proper dilution of these incredibly powerful concentrated materials. There is also a creative and intuitive process that happens when you work with plants that can’t be denied.

The Greenly Guide: Do you have a favorite ingredient that you have worked with? Can you share some of the benefits of this ingredient and why you choose to include it in your products?

Kristi: Well, I don’t work with any ingredients I don’t like so it’s hard to pick a favorite. I do love New Caledonia Sandalwood and Australian Sandalwood (we don’t use Indian because it’s endangered). I use them in SURYA, LUNA, KAMA and in WORSHIP, which comes out in March. I use sandalwood because it not only is so pleasing to the senses and has been around for over 4000 years, but also because it truly is a magical ingredient for spiritual development and emotional healing. It also has incredible skin enhancement qualities like cooling inflammation, which is the precursor to premature aging, and offers a moisturizing effect on the skin. Sandalwood really embodies the objective of KHUS+KHUS which is skin health and enhancement as well as assisting in energetic balance and healing.

The Greenly Guide: If you could describe your brand in 5 words, what would they be?

Kristi: Integrity + Vitality + Botanical + Clean + Holistic

The Greenly Guide: Can you share what has brought you the most joy in your journey to creating KHUS+KHUS?

Kristi: When you create something to relieve ailment and it works, it’s so gratifying. I’ve had patients who have been in constant pain, and I can’t imagine what they must feel. I’ve had some yoga injuries over the years, but nothing that compares to persistent pain. When people tell me that their pain has been relieved from COPIOUS, I feel such a sense of gratitude to be able to actually help someone, to provide some relief for them. When you get into the study and science of Yoga and Ayurveda, of which I have been a practitioner for many years, your objectives in life change. You are always working in a place of service. I believe the Dharma in life is to serve and to do this without expectation, but it’s always rewarding to feel some acknowledgment that what I’m doing might help someone feel better. I also feel like I’m an agent for the plants I use; they want to work for you in your life, and I’m just a facilitator of that process. So working with plants – actually, working for them – is really rewarding in general. I mean I get to work in space that smells like patchouli, roses, and sandalwood. How many more blessings can a person have in life?

The Greenly Guide: How do you promote the idea of self-care within your line? Why is this important and how do you yourself practice self-care?

Kristi: Self-care begins with awareness of choice. You start to become more conscious about everything you are doing that is impacting your health and make adjustments accordingly. When you become aware that the chemicals you are using on your body are harmful to yourself and to other life forms such as animals and plant life, as well as have negative impacts on the environment, you’ll be motivated to make changes. This stage is where KHUS+KHUS comes in to support your wellness journey. We are providing high-quality botanical oils that you may not necessarily be able to purchase individually. We formulate for healing and assist in facilitating the immune system information of the plant into your body systemically. This is how we maintain and build ojas (immunity); by doing so, we are able to manage stress reactions, relieving ourselves from inflammatory responses in the body. By applying serums to the body via the practice of abhyanga (self-massage) and inhaling the aroma of the plants, you are literally building a force field of protection from external sources, which can be in the form of free radical damage and oxidative stress, or mental emotional reactions that erode our sense of equanimity.

It’s important because it sends a message that you are demonstrating self-love. From here, many things can happen, primarily an unfoldment of consciousness, compassion for yourself and others, peace, balance, and health. We may become more open and receptive and less judgmental. Being in a place of constant judgment causes a great deal of stress; these two things are interrelated, and a judgmental mindset inhibits our ability to find peace. Facilitating this process starts by taking steps every day to improve our sense of wellness. It may not seem like you’re doing much when purchasing a certain product, but if you look at your refrigerator and your bathroom cabinet, it will give you a deeper understanding of where you are at on your journey to wellness.

I practice self-care in many ways – plant-based organic diet, meditation, herbal medicine, yoga, asana and pranayama, as well as never putting anything on my body that is toxic. I use my entire line as well as various additional plants throughout my daily life, both internally and externally. I recommend taking turmeric and reishi mushrooms every day – and don’t forget the importance of water.

The Greenly Guide: For someone new to your line, can you highlight two of your products and explain what makes them special?

Kristi: One of our newest additions to the line is SEN face serum and hydrolat which are fabulous. Eco-certified CBD extract is the star ingredient, with over 400 compounds. The serum itself has over 800 compounds, which function as healing agents inhibiting the formation of free radicals and oxidative stress. We also have WORSHIP body serum launching March 1. This product features an infusion of exotic oils used throughout history for supporting energetic healing. Champa is the main botanical; in perfume, champa is held in high esteem, but it also has excellent therapeutic uses. The chemical composition of champa is extremely complex, containing 240 constituents. The exotic sensual aroma enhances self-esteem and confidence. It cools and moisturizes the skin, relieves anger and is well-known to have grounding effects on the mind and body.

The Greenly Guide: Can you share with us what new and exciting things we can expect from KHUS+KHUS in 2017?

Kristi: We are currently working on bringing KHUS+KHUS into stores so you will be able to pick up our products at your local green beauty store and spa. We are also moving into some exotic aromas, incorporating oils you don’t often see in body serums. These oils are usually found in fine perfumery, and I want to expose people to the finest and unique aromas moving forward, while expanding my depth as a formulator.

Meet Annie of NaturalAnnie Essentials – With the vibrant island flair in her beautiful branding and a deep rooted love and knowledge for herbs and essential oils, Annie’s company is the result of a passion for formulating natural products that work. After the birth of her daughter, who was born with several medical issues, Annie noticed that through the number of surgeries her daughter had to go through, her skin became very irritated and none of the products prescribed were working. Growing up with her Grandparents in Jamaica, she was no stranger to the natural healing power of herbs and oils, so she put her knowledge to work to create products for her daughter that would yield real results.

Having great success with the products she created for her daughter, Annie expanded on her passion to become a certified aromatherapist. Combining her natural talents with her formal aromatherapy education, and NaturalAnnie Essentials was born during the Summer of 2015. Within her line, you will find an expertly curated group of essentials for the skin and hair including body wash, lip scrubs and lip balms, skincare and beautiful handmade bags.

We are thrilled today to have the opportunity to introduce you to the amazing woman behind this brand and share with you more about her story, her company and the wonderful all-natural products that she creates. Along with the interview below, we are so happy to be able to share a wonderful giveaway with you as well so you can experience these botanical creations for yourself! All of the details will be listed after our interview with Annie below.

The Greenly Guide: I’d love to hear the inspiration behind NaturalAnnie Essentials – when did you open your shop and what led you to start your business?

Annie: NaturalAnnie Essentials all started after the birth of my daughter (Tiffany) in 2014. Tiffany was born with a plethora of medical issues, Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus being the major ones. As a result of the number of surgeries she had to go through her skin got quite irritated and nothing we were prescribed helped. When over the counter creams did not work, I turned to natural butters- shea butter in particular and essential oils because this mamma needed results!

After a week of using my homemade butters on her skin I started noticing changes, this revived my love for creating.

I got excited and started making everything around the home. Soon I was making products for my family, then having essential oils “make and take” parties in my home with friends. Everyone was loving the products, my baking soda face scrub quickly became their favorite. I remember one day a close friend of mine messaged me saying “Annie you need to start selling these, the face scrub is everything!”. Not long after that I got serious, started studying Aromatherapy and got my certification, I then started making products, designing labels and the whole works. Little by little after that things just took off and NaturalAnnie Essentials was now a reality. I started selling to locals just from word of mouth, I then did a few craft shows and finally opened my Etsy shop the summer of 2015.

The Greenly Guide: How did you begin formulating your own products? Do you have any formal training that you have completed or can you talk about your background in product creation?

Annie: I am Jamaican and grew up with my grandparents in Jamaica, so herbs and oils were no strangers to me. If we got sick they would create home made remedies for relief. I always loved the smell of herbs and was a lover of plants but never truly appreciated the many benefits they offered. In 2014 I enrolled with a local branch of the School for Aromatic Studies here in Connecticut where we studied in depth different herbs and essential oils and their many uses, and also formulation. I got my ‘formal training’ through them but I am a natural creator, and am always researching and trying new formulations.

The Greenly Guide: I absolutely love your colorful and vibrant branding for your products – can you share more about the design and why you chose it?

Annie: Color makes me happy, and I am an Island girl so I wanted to incorporate that in my design. While all natural tend to feel “earthy” I thought it was also very vibrant. I love things that makes me feel happy- and this was the feel I wanted for my products. I want my customers to feel excited when they look at my packaging, make them want to indulge right away. Like my grandmother and mother I am a gardener, we are absolutely “mildly obsessed” with flowers lol, so it was a bit natural for me to add such vibrant botanical to my design.

The Greenly Guide: The clutches that come with some of your product sets are adorable and you mention handmade – do you make these yourself?

Annie: The clutches were paired with my products as bags are indeed essentials for every woman and they were a perfect fit with our look.

Our bags are handmade by a small family in Thailand. They create very detailed embroidered bags and other accessories. After working with them over the years for personal items we finally brought them on board to start creating for NaturalAnnie Essentials.

The Greenly Guide: I would love to hear more about the ingredients you use in your products and any that are unique that you would like to mention?

Annie: All our base ingredients (butters/salts/carrier oils etc.) are 100% natural, while not all are 100% organic, we carefully source from locals and all natural product distributors to make sure we are getting the safest and best quality to offer. NaturalAnnie Essentials is an aromatherapy company- this is how I started, so the intention is to include all natural oils in our products. We scent our products with essential oils from Doterra which is an essential oil company that provides the highest quality in therapeutic grade essential oils.

At least 80% of the herbs used in my products such as rose, calendula, rosemary, and some lavender, are home grown in my garden during the summertime, dried and stored for the winter months. If I am not growing the herbs I’ll source it from our local herb shop. All my oils are infused for at least six weeks before used in any products, so you’ll find powerful herbs infused in all our skincare products.

The Greenly Guide: What is the first product you ever created & what inspired you to make it?

Annie: The very first product I created was a butter for my daughter’s skin out of raw shea, aloe, and cocoa butter, herbal oils, and essential oils. This worked for her breakouts like a charm. I then started using the same formula on my skin as my face would get so dry and the results were simply amazing. This was the beginning of my face butter which was then paired with the face scrub. During this time of first timers, I had to formulate an essential oil specifically for hair growth. Funny and true story- the summer I gave birth to my daughter I was wearing very long braids, one day one got tangled into something and being very impatient I yanked it, not only did the braid got untangled, but the entire patch where the braid was came out. This was so embarrassing as it was the first thing to show once you looked at my face- a missing patch of hair. After using the essential oil blend for a few months the hair grew back and this was the birth of my hair growth oil- Happy Edges. Happy not only because the hair was back but because it grew back healthier than it was before.

The Greenly Guide: What is your favorite part about formulating products and owning your own brand?

Annie: When I’m formulating it would almost feel like a day at the spa, I do get tired, but working with essential oils is extremely relaxing and I get lost in the aroma.

Formulating also gives me that very special feeling as I am truly using what nature gave me to create so I can help someone else, or simply helping them to feel good. When I look at my brand and it makes me feel good- happy, this is the same feeling I strive to give everyone that crosses path with NaturalAnnie Essentials.

The Greenly Guide: Which of your products is your best selling and what makes it special?

Annie: Currently my best seller is the Mai Tai Punch Lip Balm & Scrub combo I can’t seem to make enough of this. My customers are just obsessed with the flavor. I’ll see posts or get DMs and emails on how they just “eat what’s left because it tastes so good”. Our lip scrub and balms are made of sugar, an all natural mai tai punch flavor, butters and a herbal oil mix, it is then colored with beet root powder (lip scrub only), It truly is yummy!

The Greenly Guide: Can you share any exciting future plans for your brand or what you envision for NaturalAnnie Essentials in the future?

Annie: My goal is to continue to grow the brand and grow our list of retailers. We can now be found in two brick and mortar boutiques: Concept forty seven and Solace Boutique and plans to be in many more by July 2017. We recently added to our line 5 amazingly scented soy candles they are truly to die for. After using our products and loving the aroma both customers and retailers kept on requesting candles- earlier this month we released them and the response was truly amazing. We did a soft launch for our gift box NAEbox in early November and that too has been doing very well. Our first shipment went out on December 5th and we are still taking orders.

I want to be able to share my passion with as many people as possible- helping others makes me happy, it is fulfilling, and it is my goal to one day open a beautiful boutique where I’ll offer my products along with those of other artisans who have the same vision.

The Greenly Guide: Anything else to add?

Annie: I always like to encourage others to never give up on their dreams. For years I’ve known I wanted a business of my own and while the idea came at a tough time in my life, I’m happy today that i did not put it on the back burner and waited. Nothing worth having comes easy, having a family and working a full time job while running your own business is no joke, but it is worth every sleepless night!

We have so many exciting things planned for 2017 so stay with us because I can’t spill all the beans just yet!
