Are your products truly SAFE? MADE SAFE has the answer!

Have you seen this seal?  What does the Made Safe certification mean and why is it important?

Made Safe

MADE SAFE is the first nontoxic certification in the country that verifies that products we use every day are made with safe ingredients not known to harm human health or the environment. For the first time, people know what’s safe to use on their bodies, for their babies, and in their homes.

MADE SAFE screens ingredients against its Toxicant Database of known harmful chemicals, which is made up of just over 5,000 chemicals found on scientifically authoritative lists from organizations and agencies from around the world. Certified products don’t contain known carcinogens, behavioral, reproductive, and neuro toxins, hormone disruptors, heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides, flame retardants, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs.

Where most standards stop there, MADE SAFE goes above and beyond—because with over 84,000 chemicals in use today, and little to no public data on how they affect our health, it’s not enough to just prohibit the chemicals on “red lists.” MADE SAFE goes above and beyond to examine ingredients for bioaccumulation (builds up in our bodies), persistence (builds up in the environment), and aquatic toxicity.

And if after all that, there’s still doubt about whether an ingredient might harm our health or the environment, MADE SAFE exercises the Precautionary Principle and doesn’t allow it in certified products.

So what does this really mean, at the end of the day? It means that MADE SAFE certified products truly meet one of the highest standards out there for safety. It means that the companies pioneering this seal are the future of a green economy that puts our health and the environment first.

It means that you can finally protect yourself and your family from toxic chemicals.

Join MADE SAFE to change the way products are made in this country to ultimately get rid of harmful chemicals—once and for all.

What does a fully certified brand look like? One of the first is Kosmatology

We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Janis, the formulator and creator of Kosmatology, and she shared with us the story behind her brand and why she decided to pursue the MADE SAFE certification.

The story of Kosmatology began when Janis’ daughter was 3 months old and developed eczema. She changed laundry detergents and modified diet, but as nothing seemed to be working, her pediatrician prescribed a topical corticosteroid. As a compounding pharmacist, Janis was well aware of the negative side effects associated with this type of medication, and she decided she wanted to treat her daughter’s eczema naturally. After a lot of research, Janis created what is now known as the Goody-Goody Grapefruit Lotion Bar—this product alone healed her daughter’s eczema completely and has kept her eczema free for 6 years!

So why would a company who is already using clean and organic ingredients to formulate their products be interested in earning the MADE SAFE seal? Janis explains:

When I first learned about Made Safe, I was like “Yeah!” Made Safe aligned perfectly with what I am trying to do with Kosmatology – provide safe products for the entire family. With all the misinformation out there regarding green washing and the misuse of the terms natural and non-toxic, this is a way to easily convey to customers that our products are created with the safest ingredients and highest standards. Made Safe also evaluates if any ingredients could harm the environment so it also indicates that we not only care about ourselves but also the environment and our impact on it.

Since creating her first product, Janis has continued to expand her line with the goal in mind to make products with clean ingredients that are also affordable. Her skincare line has become a fan favorite as they have been crafted for the entire family  – for sensitive skin, they offer a Free and Clear line, for acne or rosacea there is their popular lemongrass facewash, and they didn’t forget about the men who want clean products – they offer their Spruce’d Up line which is specifically for men.

  3. Hello, I would love to try their hand soap, I recently stop buying the conventional hand soaps, some were antibacterial, believing they work “better”, then I bought from a “natural” brand sold at Target. Recently discovered it’s not so natural at all. IG socali_azul

  5. I’m forever trying to find a natural body wash and hand soap that still smells great. I’ve tried so many! I’d love to try Kosmatology, though. Even though it’s listed as a men’s scent, the Spruce’d Up scent sounds like something I’d really love! -nigh.eve on Instagram; Becky in real life! 🙂

  6. I’ve had my eye on the lotion bar and also have sensitive acne- prone skin that its hard to find good nontoxic products without making my own concoctions so I’d also try the face care – free & clear.
